Sleep Disorders ... and professional drivers

Tilghman Medical Center understands and appreciates the array of sleep disorders that hinder people's sleep. Sleep Apnea and Obstructive Sleep Apnea are especially prevalent in commercial drivers. Tilghman Medical has partnered with Westfield Hospital to offer state-of-the-art polysomnograms, also known as sleep studies. Please visit the Sleep Disorders Center on Westfield Hospital's website for more information.
Tilghman Medical Center works with Board Certified Sleep Specialists, both in Pulmonology and Neurology. To expedite your drivers' need for a sleep study, Tilghman Medical Center will provide the necessary referral and Westfield's Sleep Disorders Center will have the driver tested within one week of that referral, including seeing the sleep specialist.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommends the use of sleep disorder screening across all modes of transportation, air, rail, marine, and trucking, as part of a long-term effort to significantly reduce the negative effects of fatigue.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "More than 100,000 annual car crashes are attributed to sleep disorders." Studies have shown an increasing prevalence of commercial truck drivers with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, as many as one third of all professional drivers suffer from this ailment.
Please go to Westfield Hospital's website for more information.
A truck driver only needs to meet a few criteria in order to qualify for a Sleep Study. Westfield will work with the insurance companies to pre-cert the patient.
